SOLVING EQUATIONS USING GRAPHS - contents A quadratic equation

When we 'solve' and equation such as x 2 - 4 = 0, this means that we find the value(s) of x which make the equation true.

We can solve the above equation by isolating the x by itself on the left of the equal sign. Thus,

x 2 - 4 = 0, so

x 2 = 4 (taking the -4 across and changing its sign), so

x = + 2 or -2
